Take a beat before posting anything, especially if you’re asking yourself, there’s no rush.
Sorry this happened to you, it gets better for most people though so sending you some positive vibes.
thank you. Yes I'm going to take a beat
Why you should:
You can control the narrative.
It's a bat signal to friends and former bosses who might be able to help you. You'll be surprise how many messages of support you get.
There is no shame in being laid off in 2025. It's a fact of life in a contracting industry.
Why you should hold off:
Your post might sound defeatist if you are feeling down about yourself when you write it.
You might feel more confident looking for work if it looks like you're still with an agency.
One final thought:
The industry is upside down right now. Nobody knows anything. No-one - apart from you - is asking why you haven't updated. So don't feel pressured either way.
Keep it short and sweet. Don’t say you’ve been laid off (no shame in it but is it really necessary?) Give a brief overview of what you’re looking for. Not so broad that you seem desperate but specific enough that you seem actually excited about the next thing.
Thank you that's sound advice
Don’t do it. Don’t update your linkedin. Just start looking for a new job and tell recruiters you’re still there. It’ll be easier to find a new job.
@SC1 - there have been articles written about the bias against unemployed people by recruiters. I think you’re better off saving the firing/layoff story for afterwork drinks once you have the job than posting about it on Linkedin
Thank you. From my experience its been easier to find a job when I've been employed. Also, I fear my post will signalI desperate for work to recruiters and hiring managers.
Just don’t do the cringey “open to work” thing.
And network your butt off.
I made the post and kept it short and sweet. I wanted to get a head of the narrative the agency had layoffs around the time I was brought on and also my time there was painful. I didn’t lean into any of this in my post, but a simple LinkedIn search will show the history or layoffs and I wanted my name to be a part of that story.
I wouldn’t post. Bunch of people will just comment pretending that they care as a virtue signal. Then they’ll also include that they are gonna help you out and this is how they brag to their network that they are gainfully employed and have leverage to help you.
In reality they don’t care, have no power to help you, and have no genuine interest in helping you. These are facts.
