Can’t American companies now just offshore the roles instead?
This is the point most people seem to miss. Especially considering how much someone throwing out these ideas has loved to offshore and/or not even pay their own bills (infamously).
They aren’t going anywhere. But in 5 years things will be better for Americans in tech
You may lack American perspective. In my role there are currently multiple h1b’s that work day and night because they won the lottery and get to work in america. For the American there is no extra compensation, we don’t get to live somewhere where we can make double or more. It’s slave labor in a sense, and it’s non competitive with Americans. EYP obviously love sit because they can make people work 12+ hour days as the norm. Eliminate the h1bs. And WLB will be much better

To be clear:
1.) This is NOT an annual fee. It’s a one-time fee that applies only to the petition.
2.) Those who already hold H-1B visas and are currently outside of the country right now will NOT be charged $100,000 to re-enter.
H-1B visa holders can leave and re-enter the country to the same extent as they normally would; whatever ability they have to do that is not impacted by yesterday’s proclamation.
3.) This applies only to new visas, not renewals, and not current visa holders.
It will first apply in the next upcoming lottery cycle.

I think it’s $100k a year for all new h1b that apply outside the country. So if I work for Microsoft in china, but I want to move to Seattle Hq, Microsoft now has to pay the government 100k every year I work in Seattle
But if you were educated in U.S. and obtain a h1b visa after your OPT you can. Or if you currently have an h1b then you also no 100k.
I know there is some issue with stamps leaving the country, but I don’t yet understand that nuance

It’s really just IT services, this will just make companies prioritize actual techncially skilled people
