I work for a small publication and we have very strict rules against AI, with the exception of some light editing tools. We all know about the hallucination issues with AI, It shouldn't be going anywhere near news publications.
I'm interning right now so I'm still pretty new to the industry, but I think there is still a lot of taboo about using AI. Everyone I work with seems to think that their job will disappear if they start incorporating it, like it will make them redundant. I kind of see that rationale, but I also wonder if other newspapers are going to surpass us because they can be more productive and efficient.
I don't use AI. I have heard of othes using it but I haven't evern tried to use it. I guess I just think it is a fine line to walk between cheating and doing it yourself.
My company has strict rules against AI, and I support that.
I'm seeing what AI is producing and a reporter, I'm not impressed. Sure, for some features of readily available information, it's fine, whatever... but for anything breaking, new information, research-based, even videos... the answer is no. I saw an AI attempt to glean a story from a YouTube recording and honestly, my 10 year old could have explained what happened better.
In addition to that, my livelihood is at stake. The fact that other journalists choose to do that, in my opinion, makes us appear to be obsolete. If the reporters go away, all that's left is the AI doing its personal best, which is, as its shown at least today, not good enough. Plus, selfishly, this is like, the only thing I'm good at.
The only thing I use AI for is to transcribe my interviews and Grammarly for light editing. Ever since Grammarly integrated AI into its service, the quality has gotten worse. My AI transcription service saves me time, but I still have to verify the quotes. I tried to use Google Pinpoint to review documents for an investigative story, but it failed to read the files. So, I just read through them the old-fashioned way. I don't use AI for research, writing or anything else, really.
As a business and technology writer, I love new tools and gadgets that make my life easier, but my fundamental problem with AI tools is that the companies that create them seem to have a fundamental disregard for arts, history and the humanities. Researching, interviewing and writing are supposed to take time. I would love to have tools available to me that actually work, but that isn't the case for most of them.
My company doesn’t allow the use of AI for anything written, including emails, and I really respect that. We’re being paid to create ourselves and not just use AI and edit
