Yup gotta go for the big pubcos. I work 10 hours a week probably

likefunnyuplifting

common misconception about in house is that its cushy, its cushier relative to biglaw but still not a breeze. if u work less than 40hrs, you are underutilized and a layoff risk

like

also Legal is a cost center, why pay a lawyer 200k plus to only do 10 hrs a week of work

Though I worked with good people, this was my story for the first many years of solo in-house. Many nights talking to my biglaw counterparts at all hours, no vacation, etc. larger in-house departments can be run more like normal business units, but smaller ones may not be.

Haha do you work at my last company? Start looking now.

Sorry to hear that. My brother is in a similar situation- how are you thinking about next steps? What are people’s thoughts on shorter resume stints

What’s the best way to negotiate more money during a contract to FTE conversion? My manager and I had the conversion convo today and he said he’d like to convert me immediately and took the action item to do so. In terms of comp he said they should already have what I’m expecting but I don’t think I communicated any FTE number to my contracting company. In this job market with all the layoffs, should I count my blessings and take what I can get or is there wiggle room.

I don’t have much energy to paint these days but knocked out a quick abstract during the holiday break. Ignore the messy edges - it was a study but I didn’t get any further on the project.

Is anyone else convinced we are headed for a correction in equities, and quickly? The market has been straight up for months, with the exception of a blip around GME week. Seems like everyone is day trading, too, which I take as a sign of froth. I know market timing is typically a bad idea, but talk me out of moving to cash for a few weeks until things get cheap(er).

Anyone ever considered contractor gig in Meta/Facebook or any other big players in tech? I'm full-time in a smaller company and it's pretty stable. Wondering if the move could be worthwhile. What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. I don’t want to be miserable again. I know Amazon is poorly reputed for lawyer WLB… what about other places?

Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager.
