I’ve been there. Keep looking and applying. Go to local creative events and network, network, network. Keep your portfolio updated. If you’re really desperate, take on whatever sexy pro bono work you can get, even spec work if it comes to that. Make sure your résumé is as dead-simple to understand as possible (and never use those skill-level things, they look very amateur). Spend after hours honing your craft or learning a new skill you can market yourself with (After Effects is a huge bonus to potential employers). Most importantly: don’t give up!
Keep plugging away, but in the meantime, be very grateful that you have a “current job”. So many good folks can’t get one with all the changes in our industry. Remembering your good fortune will also make you more confident when you are in an interview. It will happen .
Yes I am grateful to have a job but its client side so it’s not at an agency
Network your butt off. I’ve seen two folks get interviews via coffee chats with folks in their field. Both were told that HR didn’t get them the right candidates from job postings.
are you getting feedback on your work?
if not, get feedback. what are you missing? what isn't good enough?
then work on spec and proactive stuff to fill those holes.
I’m in NY for the record, i would love a mentor ship program or something..and I’m not sure some people love my book, others don’t so it depends. I also don’t feel like I have enough experience but if no one hires me how do I get more? I feel like i’m in this endless loop.
Appreciate the fact that you have a job.
In the same boat! 6mo into applying and just got my annual review, cue the eye rolls! Hang in there. I’m contemplating waiting tables, though my husband isn’t pleased with that option. Ha! Keep calm and apply on!
1. Start a side hustle and/or volunteer for a nonprofit to get more fresh/interesting work in your book. It will also give you more confidence and you’ll be more positive doing something new and exciting.
2. PUT YOUR BOOK ON SEMPLICE
it should be the same caliber as what they show in the showcase tab
That should increase your chances of being hired. I’d hire any designer off that site.
3. Network.
But 1 and 2 first! Good luck!
