Lighten up my guy it was pretty funny and the crazy ones isn’t some sacred object.
It was lazy to rip off an old ad. So…I guess that makes it on brand?
It’s not a ripoff if it’s a very obvious parody. And a great one brw. Turning an ad that celebrates geniuses into one that celebrates lazyness is pretty effing good.

Super funny to me that people were sitting around eating 7 layer dip getting super upset about a 30 year old ad like it’s a drawing of Mohammad’s face. Every ad should be parodied and recycled none of what we do actually matters. Let’s have fun and burn it all down.

If you think that they did an ad celebrating brilliant laziness and the ad itself was a lazy copy of a brilliant one then everything falls into place… and makes it in fact lazy brilliant

I do know the ad they’re parodying. But, I didn’t make the connection until people started calling it a rip off. So, I know people outside the industry definitely didn’t know. My mom and dad both laughed at parts. So, I think—for the rest of the non-cynical, non-advertisers out there—it might have done its job.

It’s not stealing. It’s parody. Relax. They aren’t trying to get away with anything; they hope you’ve seen the Apple ad.
Ironically, the Apple ad was accused of ripping off Jack Karouac… “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes “Awww!””
I do remember "The Crazy Ones," and I was a bit put off by the brazen Cutwater spot by AKQA. In fact, I watched it in the presence of a friend who works at AKQA (though not on this account) and threw him some necessary shade for that thing.
Though I do think of "The Crazy Ones" as one of the most iconic spots ever, the parody (yes, I understood it as a parody, since it was such a direct lift) didn't upset me... UNTIL I saw the one-pager AKQA put out about the spot. They (still attempting to stay in that META, self-referential mode, I guess) talk about this work with barely any reference to the original that they are parodying, other than to say they were "inspired" by the Steve Jobs speech.
That's a hack's take, IMO. I agree--student-level BS that shouldn't have made it to air.

At first I was pretty put off by the parody since the original was one of my favorite ads when it came out.
I also thought it felt too inside baseball.
But, given that the whole thing is about achieving greatness with little effort…I reluctantly say it works for me.
I do…but I guess to prove their point about working smarter and being lazy?

The idea of your ad was to parody another ad that “like no one even knows”? Then what’s the value? There’s no “there” there, and it’s just lazy creative. It’s also an idea that every tram has shown me for every manifesto type project I’ve ever worked on. “What if we riffed off (insert lee clow spot)”
That’s not an idea. it’s copying homework.
Agree it’s pretty inside baseball. Felt like advertising for advertisers - who apparently didn’t love it, anyway.
