Such good conversation around encouraging students to use critical thinking, not so much how to think; although some thoughts are HURTFUL!
What are other ways/strategies you encourage your students to use critical thinking versus how to think? Share please!!

I like to give them something to "debate" or talk over and provide each group with a different side to the argument. Obviously you have to carefully choose your subject matter, but I think it really helps my students understand that there are multiple viewpoints to some arguments. Especially about things that actually affect them like poverty.

smart

Love it! Debate gives our students an opportunity to make a point with evidence! So many powerful skills exercised there! There’s also a particular culture used when students engage in debate, the rules, norms, etc. It is overall fascinating!

When beginning a piece of literature, I first help the kids access the relevant culture. I have used web quests, but I have found that the kids researching their choice of topics and creating Slides containing information and pics results in more students participating. Recently they researched heraldry for the Medieval Era and reproduced either a family crest that they found or created their own personal crest. Anyone have other activities they use?
