I think it really depends on what the job is. Personally, I don't think you need a college degree if you are able and competent at your job. However, college does teach you valuable life skills like unique critical thinking tools, how to be independent with your self and studies, it also helps you build a network and gain exposure to different perspectives. That said, I believe experience, skills, and work ethic can be just as valuable—if not more so—than a degree in many fields. I’d absolutely consider hiring someone without a degree if they demonstrate the right abilities, mindset, and willingness to learn. College isn't the only path to success, and it's important to recognize the talent and expertise that come from alternative learning experiences.
As a part-time college instructor, I’ve worked with some great students along with students that do the bare minimum to get by. The university would prefer that we don’t fail them. I have a reputation for being a tough grader, because I want them to be able to compete in the workplace. Unfortunately, there are a lot of grads out who fall short of what you described.
Interesting, do they offer training on the job or courses so people can learn?
From what I read so far, the showcase talent who received various certifications and completed trainings to show that they have a lot to offer without a diploma.
