It sounds like you're overthinking it. It's as simple as adding a few drops of water .... if that's what you like.
In Scotland, this is common. Getting a small vessel of water (a water jug) with your whisky is common. You simply pour a few drops in.
Objectively, a few drops of water changes the composition of the whisky and will open up aromas, allow more complex flavors to emerge, allow your palate to focus on flavors that otherwise might be overwhelmed by alcohol, etc. There really isn't debate about that. People argue that they're purists and it ruins the experience or that they're "hardcore" and don't need their whisky "watered down".
Just do what you like.
I savor my whiskey chilled. Adding a couple of cubes of ice not only keeps it refreshingly cold but also subtly dilutes it, eliminating the need to add water
Add a few drops at a time. Be need for more than that. Avoid ‘cutting’ the whisky with loads of water and don’t put ice in it as this waters it down too but in a way you can’t really control.

Depend on the whiskey and your own personal tastes and preferences
I add few drops of chilled club soda. Personally, I found it to be better than water and ice.
