That's a good point, saying a job is like a family is almost always a way of manipulating people. In fairness, some people may mean it in a benign way, just to say people are casual or friendly or whatever. When management makes a point of always bringing up that the organization is a family it's a bad sign.
Couldn't agree more. I instantly have my guard up whenever I hear a company describe itself as being "like a family." In my experience, that's always code for "we're going to hold you to unreasonable expectations while paying you a pittance."

Well, some families do, but I see your point. The conditions are unacceptable in too many places, with understaffing and safety concerns, none of which are being addressed as they should be.
