The firm retreat is my literal nightmare. I am being forced to spend a weekend at a luxury resort doing team-building ropes courses with people I already spend 60 hours a week with. I just want to be at home with my dog, but attendance is highly encouraged (read: mandatory if you want a bonus). How do you survive 48 hours of forced socialization without losing your mind or saying something you’ll regret after three free margaritas?

It's literally the opposite dynamic from a personal vacation. The worst part is the anticipation and then the trip home you're blissfully excited. Lol. In all seriousness, it's such a short period of time in the scheme of things. You'll have fun once you're there and just try to steer clear of the people getting sloppy.

Don’t you get relief for billable hours? Be kind to yourself, live it up for a couple of days. Drink the good wine.

Firms don't care that things like this are torture for some people. Either have only one drink or don't drink. It will be over fast. The following week will be what's really tough after having a weekend taken away from you. Good luck.

I love retreats. Great chance to socialize with the power players of your group and firm. That’s the only way to get ahead.

I am mostly sober just cause I mostly no longer care for alcohol. I will have a quick, quiet conversation with the bartender at the outset of the Christmas party, or whichever event I'm attending, and have NA drinks in a lowball for the evening. Now that I'm reflecting on the situation, I'm wondering if this will be as smooth for anyone who doesn't look like they could conceivably bear a child. I'll come back to let you know in ten to twenty years.

I went to a small firm and don’t miss these at all.

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? (Small firm, only associate under this partner and have been working at the firm for 2 years). There are an increasing number of passive aggressive comments from the partner who expects to be completely hands off once the case lands on my desk. Wants me to figure it all out despite cases being from different areas of law.

Second year associate here who recently switched from litigation to corporate law. I am absolutely swamped while simultaneously having no idea what I’m doing ever and I’m feeling so burnt out. The partners are pretty great and feedback is constructive which I’m grateful for, but I’m so desperate for a compliment I’ve been saving any scrap of positivity in a folder 😭 it’s December 22 and I haven’t done my Christmas shopping because I don’t feel capable of thinking about it. I need a hug.
