The SA that I was working with at one store has been really unresponsive (5 days before responding; I’d always have to text first to check in). I ended up finding someone else at a different store who’s been amazing; do I owe the first one an explanation? Should I tell them I found someone else? Don’t want to jeopardize my relationship with Cartier or string anyone along, but not sure if there’s standard etiquette here.

I’d say go to the different store and no need to justify. If you stop texting the other SA then it sounds like they aren’t good enough at their job to notice anyway. I will say though if you go back into the original store then the SA you’ve been working with will likely still be the person assigned to working with you via their systems

I work at a ‘free market’ firm and have developed a very good reputation among partners. Naturally, they are drowning me in work. Each time a new case comes up, the partner will email asking if I have “time and interest” in helping. When I’m at capacity, I take these words at face value and explain why I can’t do it, and that seems to work out ok with no hard feelings. But what’s the “interest” thing? I have a friend who just started a new job-went from a big ad agency to a small start up. The boss at the new job wants to create the company website to show generic work. No actual clients, just work with made up company names. They have many clients that they work with-but won’t show them online. I have never heard of this? Why would someone do that? Isn’t it counterproductive to show fake companies and work? How can they discourage their boss that’s not a good idea without offending them?

There’s no such thing as side projects, in my eyes. Every project is an opportunity to display your creativity, and the few you’re most proud of make it to your book. Generally, the consensus these days is that we want our advertising to not look/feel like advertising. So, why should you be concerned to separate what was and wasn’t “advertising?”
