The venue I’m about to sign a contract with for $7000 just emailed me and said if I have my wedding this year, instead of June 2024 as currently planned, they’d reduce the cost to $2000. I’m kind of mad about this. I don’t want to move things up a year, but now I feel like I’m almost getting ripped off by booking way in advance. I get there’s a premium to ensure you get your date, but still that’s a huge difference. Would it be inappropriate to ask for a discount? What would you do?

I wouldn't think about this as them devaluing the cost/services at all. This is legit a fire sale because they know nobody wants to/can throw a wedding together this quickly, so they'll take a loss to host something rather than have an empty date

Doesn't mean that it's not worth it under normal circumstances

That’s a great way to look at it, thank you! So no discount for booking in advance? 😔 haha

Sounds like they just desperately need money and want to book as many weddings this year as possible. Since people plan weddings in advance, it makes sense that dates next year are more expensive than say a date next month. People WANT more prep time.

The discount offered has no bearing on your wedding date next year. You can ask for a discount, but it doesn’t seem likely.

You don’t want to change dates, so don’t. Forget about the discount they offered you. It’s not an indication that they’re ripping you off. Lots of things in life are discounted for various reasons, you take advantage of the discount if it is what you want.

Bottom line: Do you think this venue is really worth $7000? Can you afford the price? If yes, go ahead with it. If not, find someplace else.

They’re definitely just trying to fill the dates this year since they know they still have time to fill 2024 dates. 2k is better than nothing for a day they’ve likely deemed too soon for most people to be able to pull an event together

like

Update: I had to move our date up 2 weeks, but I did get $2k off!

It’s not that uncommon. I view it as the same as how Friday and Sunday weddings are cheaper than sat.

oof I would also be annoyed

Is the price for next year a Saturday? There is only 52 Saturdays a year and likely half of that if your location has peak wedding season. You are paying premium for the optionality.

We are almost May, so pulling a wedding in June is unlikely. It sounds like they want to sell the date to make some profit instead of nothing.

It is, but the $2000 this year is also for a Saturday. It’s only $1500 if I did a Friday this year, $6500 for a Friday next year.

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!
