The only issue with groceries is they're expensive as hell.
Island fever is a thing.
I'm going to be honest - as a Hawaii native now living on the mainland, I understand your desire to do so but believe doing this is highly irresponsible. The state has been going through a rapid rise in COVID-19 cases and no matter how tempting it may be to 'recharge in a tropical paradise' for a month, it is insensitive to the many locals suffering. Many of my friends here from Hawaii have avoided going back to prevent contributing to the asymptomatic spread in their communities, despite not having seen their families in several months up to a whole year+.
However if you must do this for whatever reason, please make sure you properly quarantine yourself at your home/hotel for the legally mandated 14 days and wear a mask everywhere you go afterwards. Please support local businesses, even if more costly, as they are getting hit the hardest. Your economic support is the best way to show your respect to the community despite being a tourist during an ongoing pandemic.
FYI, groceries are expensive and taxed (makes NYC seem cheap) and some places are still out of supplies since the hurricane. Also, the 'aloha wiggle' is called a shaka.
It really helps to get this perspective. Hope your mother has the support she needs around her. Thank you again
They’ll make you quarantine when you get there
Hawaii is considering a no-quarantine exemption for travelers who can show proof of a negative test result from prior three days before arriving.
However, that program has been delayed until Sept 1 for now.
The time difference would prevent me from going to do remote work.
Also, the 14 day quarantine is super strict. You can only leave your hotel room for medical care or the airport. All food must be delivered to the door
I’m working PST. So I will start early, and end early - have the full evening to myself.
Starting Spet 1st, the quarantine requirement can be worked around if you are tested negative
Go for it. Life is short
It’s only a month. Have fun!
See below for a recent post on TPG lounge Facebook group for some perspective on the current situation in Hawaii. For the safety of the people in that state, my advice would be to wait to visit there until we are on the other side of this pandemic. What you are considering doing is non-essential.
Not sure where you are now, but from the East coast it’s like a 6 hour time change so you may want to make sure that you won’t be expected to be online in whatever time zone your current office is in.
Same @A2, same.
Everything is very expensive there b/c it’s imported 😬
It’s even more expensive since many supplies are in short demand.
Doubt hotels are operating to their normal schedule and capacity.
Do it. I’d stay on the Big Island - most underrated. Super chill vibes, everybody driving 5 mph below speed limit. Practice the “Aloha” wiggle (thumb and pinky) before you go ;)
Do it. Maui
🥴 Terry you really took me for a loop there haha
Starting Sept 1st, you can get a NAAT test before boarding to skip the quarentine requirement. I’m thinking that timeframe as well (fingers crossed that mine is negative) Understand on the groceries - is the same on all islands
Tax implications ?
Should just be another state filing, but I agree with consulting a pro.
Did you consider Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands? Also the USA and much cheaper
Have traveled both extensively. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Virgin islands. As Hawaii is new, that is where my mind went first.
From a cost perspective, I understand the jump, but also considering this is a bit of a once in a lifetime kinda thing, might make the plunge.
If your lease is ending, will you have to update your address for anything- especially if you may get any important mail? Not sure if you would have to notify your HR and get their approval.
My brother decided to move back with parents out of state for 4 months as his lease was ending. He had to update his address, notify HR, and get approval.
I lived in Honolulu, HI for 4 months. Great place - you have access to everything the Waikiki side gives you a city feel and the north shore is completely a different world. Honestly i was thinking bout that option as well as I am over it WFH from Atlanta. Anyday staying the islands is fun around this time tbh. I am on Ig as “dineshraj_goud” hit me up I can provide you the contact of the realtor who did a month to month lease arrangement for me during my stay in Oahu.
