references have always been a weak signal honestly. the person gives you their best 3 contacts, those contacts say nice things. the real question is what actually predicts on-the-job performance better. ive seen more teams shift to work samples and structured interviews over references. the phone call format is dead but the underlying need to verify isnt
Not a recruiter but IMO references are super stressful. Job hunting is an inherently adversarial process with your employer. Even if everyone loves you, any reference is a chance to get found out and put on the wrong kind of short list. I would love to get my manager as a reference, for example, but the truth is I'm just going to pick 3 friends who won't tell anyone else I'm job hunting.
