Admin seemed like a natural progression for me, until...a kid told me that if she disappeared, no one would notice. I realized at that moment that the impact--the most positive impact that I had, was in the classroom. I would never have connected with that kid like I did without the classroom. As it was, no one from admin saw her the way I did. She would have disappeared, and no one, including me, would have noticed. I was able to get her services and back on track.
I think you might be overthinking what your principal said. Would you have reacted the same if your principal had been a woman and said the same? Granted, I don't know the time in which it was said, but when I retired from the traditional public school classroom teaching last year, my principal said she didn't want to lose me as a teacher - and she meant just that. Our campus has a high demand for damn good teachers, and I'll be the first to say that, yes, I think I was a damn good teacher. I often brought up the lowest scores, found those "invisible" kids, and made them enjoy school and made parents feel like they were welcome to be a part of their child's education. So, yes, I believed her when she said she was going to hate losing me as a teacher, so why wouldn't you feel the same way? Your principal should feel a certain way about losing a valuable asset to your campus. Now, could he have said congratulations, and I wish you luck? Also, yes, but I still stand by what I said.
I was asking to move up in my school. Without hope for progression I won’t stick around
