My experience in his chambers was phenomenal and he went above and beyond to mentor me and prepare me for my next job. I’m a former educator that has transitioned to working for a SaaS company. I have been hired under one role but have been managing projects in design UX/UI, content management (auditing and process development), and governance (currently working on a bot project). I joined KPMG a while ago from federal consulting. Federal consulting had super good work life balance but I’ve been working at KPMG strategy for a while now. The hours are wild, my managers expect perfection, and I feel like it’s all meaningless. Does anyone else feel like this, how have you dealt with it, and is it like this once you go into industry?

I’m currently in the process of being converted from contractor to permanent. In my initial conversations I was under the impression that I was in a different pay grade and asked for a salary 25k higher than the max allotted for my position. I feel like it gave the impression that I don’t know what I’m doing. Any suggestion how I can recover from this?

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

I went to a T14 law school, got great grades and glowing recommendations, and wrote (what I thought was) a great writing sample. But I got rejected from all 70 federal clerkships I applied to. The only thing I can think of is: I took a non traditional route after law school and did a 2 year public interest fellowship in a niche field of administrative law. The rejection gave me a lot of self hatred. I still really want to clerk. Any advice? What is wrong with me? I feel like a failure.

Would your judge blame you for higher court reversing his opinion if he handed you the research and told you what to write? Should he?

To those who applied for and obtained an appellate clerkship *after* clerking at a district court: How many applications did you submit to get your appellate clerkship? Did you have your district court judge advocate on your behalf, and if so, how much of a difference do you feel it made?

I graduated in May 2020, but did not start working at my firm until September 2020. I’ll start my clerkship in June 2021 — will I start at JS-12 or JS-13? If I start at JS-12, will I ever bump up to JS-13?

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?

For writing samples in clerkship applications, can you edit/revise a final work product already submitted to the court? For instance, if there's a typo or something. Can more substantive edits be made to improve the work product?
