McKinsey & Company Hey folks!
Was wondering what sort of life sciences projects does usually the Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey & Company take on?
Commercial, access and pricing, M&A, transformation, implementation? (all of them perhaps?)
Basically, what would someone with an LS background be mainly working on in these firms on a day-to-day basis?
Thanks!

On exits from ghSMART, the most common is don’t exit. We have single digit turnover of consultants so very few leave. Mobility at the firm is great and some folks pivot from consulting into operating roles.
But here are some exits:
3 Smarties became CHROs of large public companies.
3 joined PE firms or hedge funds to run their talent function.
1 joined a F500 to run talent.
1 was given a BILLION dollars to start a clean tech energy fund as founding GP.
A couple went on to be CEOs of companies.
Some folks have hung a shingle to do solo consulting work in a niche they enjoy.
A couple joined AI/survey shops to go deep with LLMs and quanty people analytics.
One is a chief of staff to a billionaire tech founder.
One kite boards a lot and coaches founders.
One became chief talent officer for a governor.
Nobody has retired yet to run a large not for profit or foundation or university but that’s coming. Those are all of the exits in the past few years that I can think of.
Bottom line is people exit to corporate executive roles, private equity roles, or further specialize in adjacent human capital roles.
Wow thank you both for the question and for the kind words. I’m the founder of ghSMART. Happy to share some thoughts on your question.
First the reasons not to go from McK to ghSMART. 1) If you are a quant but not a people person, 2) If you want an operating role (join a client) vs. an advisory role, 3) If the adrenaline rush of being “too busy” all the time secretly appeals to you and allows you an excuse for not getting the other priorities in your life in line and you don’t like making choices for yourself and prefer others to strongly encourage you to do things that are in their interest but not yours.
Reasons to upgrade to ghSMART. If you read the 2023 Vault rankings, you’ll see that ghSMART captured more #1s by category than any other firm in our industry including #1 in selectivity, compensation, client impact, challenging work, overall satisfaction, few hours in the office, and I’m also really proud that we were ranked #1 on diversity.
The Glassdoor rating of 4.8/5.0 is #1 in not only consulting but if you compare to top firms in tech and finance too.
And the “Great Place to Work” index is the third platform on which ghSMART ranks #1 in the industry. I think our score was a 96% or 97%.
Bottom line is ghSMART is like MBB (70% of our colleagues come from MBB) except 1) the culture is people first not client first if you can believe that, 2) the work is all about leadership and not supply chain cost cutting or product market sizing etc., 3) you get a TON of freedom to craft the life you really want to live at work and personally.
Better WLB and better comp! Yes.
I founded the firm 28 years ago to help leaders amplify their positive impact on the world and give wildly talented people a place to build their careers by having impact, working with talented but nice colleagues, make money, and have a life. It’s all about freedom. Generosity. Gratitude. Learning. It’s the firm I wanted to want to work at, which did not exist. And I’m proud and happy we’ve stayed true to that vision throughout our history.
And finally, leadership is about the most positive force for good in the world so imagine focusing on helping people succeed as leaders as your job. It’s so fun. It’s massively fulfilling and interesting work and you make a very direct impact on people’s lives every day—both colleagues and clients.
Sorry for the long reply. DM me if you performed in the top 25% of your peer group at MBB or top 1% of your peer group anywhere else and I’ll hook you up with the right colleague with whom to have a career chat. Easy peasy. Your dream job awaits. Thanks!
DM me if you’re interested - great place to work, that said it’s not for everyone
I have a good impression of them due to some quirky posts from the CEO
On the Glassdoor, it’s 100% approval of CEO
CEO did a Q&A a few months back on here. Check it out
