Thoughts on if it’s ever worth it to take a 20% pay cut to go to a firm that has a better brand and allegedly better upside in 2-3 years?

Every firm says there’s better upside in 2-3 years. Rarely happens

likesmart

There are places where you may want to consider this. Often MBB will push you to level down. This is a bit if they do this because they can, but they also do it to help people be more successful and likely to succeed long-term. If those things pan out the upside can be well worth the short term step back to take two or three steps forward.

Better upside needs to be on paper, then yes

This is 100% the answer. I've lost track of how many "better upside" offers I've received over the years. The only way to know if it's real is if they're willing to put the actual variable comp calculation into the employment contract.

like

At this point, I’d be happy at another firm with proper support and competent resources to deliver the projects I sell. I’ll take the 20% base reduction if it can be made up via VC or some other equity type payout.

like

'Worth it' isn't a quant decision. Is it a better opportunity for growth? Do you like your team better? Will you be learning something you wouldn't otherwise? Will it open a door for the future? Will you be happier?

At the partner level, a 20% cut shouldn't change your lifestyle, so it really should be about the opportunity, not the comp.

like

Yeah I gotcha. I don’t have a base though. It’s all variable which is sort of the problem. I have to have a pretty sizeable contingency built in. Hence why 20% would be tough because I’m risk adverse and already have maybe too much built in.

20% cut is huge. Not a good decision in my books, even if a projection 3 years down looks better on paper because no one can predict the future.
But obviously you know the specifics better than anyone else here.

I don’t think it’s gaslighting… ie INTENTIONALLY trying to trigger you… but I do think it’s just a different world these days. For example, housing in my area is just soooo much more expensive than 20 years ago. When senior Ps bought houses, they got their dream homes for a fraction of today. Like say 2x their income. Today that number is 5-6x my income for a similar dream home. Finances just work different when housing costs are so high.

like

I don’t like that big a difference. The difference for an early stage partner is like $50-60k, which feels like a lot because that is a comp level around an inflection point. For a later stage partner making well above their needs, it doesn’t matter as much.

Another thing about a 20% drop in base is that so much variable comp keys off of base. It will take many years to make that up. Wonder if you can negotiate to more like 10% drop if this is a live opportunity.

like

It doesn’t feel good to me either. Sure maybe it will all work out, but there are a lot of variables and unknowns, I think more than are being acknowledged.

like

I’d have to know a lot to make a move anywhere, let alone a payout like that. I know 20 years of our financial performance which has been beyond stellar. Knowing that is just so invaluable to me as an owner and just trying to balance upside with some consistency.

It is if you buy the firm and pay yourself that as CEO. Otherwise eh unless you are getting a MAJOR resume line.

Don’t underestimate the power of brand (lack thrreof on your resume), upside or not. If you have to explain what your company does - it’s not worth it

I disagree with this. I took a chance on a smaller firm and I have had a killer year and more invites on boards, and other forums than I ever did at Deloitte. To each his own.

Seems very circumstance dependent. Are you moving from a position of strength or is your current platform flawed? I would generally choose the best platform to build your business /brand and assume the company will come with success. But if you are doing well, it seems that partner moves should have some guaranteed amounts as you transition. Personally, I also don’t like all variable.

Just got lowballed somewhat hard. I have around 2yoe and had resigned last month, i cleared all interviews of one company and the hr actually have me a number less tha my current base, all bonus would be dropped. While i understand that some money is better than no money, what possible options do i have?

When you’re frustrated with a product, do you take that frustration out on the product? Would you go the customer support route?
