Since when do restaurants need permission from the government to raise their prices? This is just an attempt to trick people into not realizing what the real price is until the bill comes. I’d rather just be told the full price upfront, and decide if I’m willing to pay it.
It’s like they are trying to drive more people out of Manhattan
Pro
Sounds like businesses need to make money to stay open. Personally would rather they just raise their prices not tack on a hidden fee that I have to calculate (cough sales to cough). But I won’t be going to restaurants very often for quite a long time so I guess it doesn’t affect me too much.
Pro
Yeah, those greedy restaurants are making money hand over fist. I heard somewhere a ton of new restaurants have opened over the past 6 months.
Huh? Have you ever worked on your feet for 12 hours a day carrying plates back and forth while dealing with rude customers? Are you aware that most servers in the US make less than ~$8/hour? Hardly an “easy” job and it’s clear you’ve never worked in the service industry from your comment. Nobody is forcing you to go dine at a restaurant.
Heard about it from you! Sounds pretty dumb. Been tipping well, but if you add extra charges I’m going to eat out less
SVP, I understand. But at the end of the day, you’re still helping businesses and employees by tipping well.
10% surcharge is basically a tax that disincentives people from eating out
They need it. You rather New York turn into San Fran?

So glad I’m leaving this city in a month
Meh, I love nyc restaurants. I’m glad to help for a while. Typically I’m pretty vocal about the tipping madness but this pandemic has absolutely ravaged the industry
