To all who say don’t disclose your ADHD to your firm, can you explain what the downsides are? I would like to ask for certain accommodations but am wondering if it’s best to just try to informally do them rather than couch them as an accommodation the firm must comply with…

I’d try informally first. I think there’s a stigma (inaccurate) that it is overdiagnosed or exaggerated so I guess the concern is people would see it as an excuse. It sucks, but I think people are still learning about what ADHD/ADD actually means for people, especially adults

like

At least 1/3 of the associates in our litigation dept are diagnosed with ADHD and are open about it to help decrease the stigma. It’s amazing having a support network of those who “get it”. But I also know a lot of older folks who don’t and will still use ADHD like a slur.

I also try to correct people when they use ADHD as a pejorative. Once I accidentally let it slip during a first round interview that I have ADHD but consider it as somewhat of a strength in litigation. I ended up being the final candidate so it certainly didn’t tank my chances! I think the times are changing as more people are open and honest about it.

It’s generally not taken seriously by the older generations. What type of accommodations would you be requesting?

Yeah i agree with SA1. The coach may be helpful but I’d recommend hiring them out of your own pocket. On the start stop times, generally people need to be online and working during the same hours to effectively work as a team, though I will say this gets a bit better on the margins as you get more senior and people trust you’ll get the work done (for example, I often log off a bit “early” because I wake up earlier than everyone)

I disclose that I have a disability in the hiring process as I also sufferer with other mental health issues. But, I do not disclose my adhd. I think people would see it as an excuse . Unfortunately…

Don't know where you are now, but a lot of biglaw firms have one or a couple professional development coaches/career coaches on staff (they might not be called that but the function is there) that associates can work with. They regularly work with associates on some of those things -- like time management, prioritization, effective communication, burnout. Obviously that doesn't cover everything you're interested in getting help with, it could be a place to start.

Are people still live on here? I was diagnosed last year with ADD and I’ve tried two stimulants so far. I’m switching to Strattera (from Adderal XR) after some stories shared in this bowl, and some family members who have been really happy with it.

After 4 years I want to leave law because of my adhd! I have been to 4 different firms and at each place I feel like I have been “found out”. At every place at least one attorney catches me about my attention to detail. I am so down on myself now. I can’t bring myself to care about small details that I know don’t actually matter. Sitting at a desk all day in word documents is the ultimate form of torture to me. My strengths are talking to people. I am super outgoing. Looking for a new career

What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.
