What I wish I knew
- Your project experience is much more important than where you work - make sure you’re getting the relevant reps in consulting
- PE ops can vary significantly across funds - some have fully built out teams that are onsite at portcos weekly and others have a few people who are pseudo executive coaches l
- It’s a tough role to transition to without some sort of industry experience - the consulting skillset is very valuable but working in a PE-backed company really helped me prepare
- Compensation ramps quickly, but it’s a get rich long game
- Culture, fund performance and your ability to survive is way more important than trying to land at the best fund. If you can stay in a seat for 5-10 years at a well performing fund you will make plenty of money
Just some thoughts off the top of my head
Having experience with and being comfortable leading the typical projects you see in PE Ops is way more important than coming from a big name company
