You don’t have to leave if you don’t want to. You can head to pharma. Or freelance—that’s how I made the most money in my career. I’ve got a decade on you and I’m still in the industry.
You could do pharma. It’s actually more creative than you’d think, as long as you do DTC, not HCP. I’ve won more awards (including Lions) than I ever did in general. And the people tend to be fun, talented, and low ego. PS, I have two decades on you and still working.

@CD2—it might be a bit tricky for you to get in now. Pharma isn’t rocket science—it’s not that hard. But there is a bit of a learning curve. It may not be a bad idea to get into an agency that has a bit of pharma. That way you could get some experience by helping out on a project or two. When I made the jump from general to pharma, I had ONE ad for an allergy med. That was enough to get me in.
I’m with you. After over 20 years in this industry I’m feeling it’s time for me to get out. I’m the oldest person in my department and one of the oldest people in my office.
The real question is where to go and how to approach it.
It’s a bit of long story. But to find a job in pharma I would probably have to leave town and subject the family to a move. I think I stopped dreaming big long time ago.
