I find it’s mostly done out of day-to-day client fear of having make a decision. If it doesn’t go well they can point to the “influencer” first, then the agency.
I hate it but it works.
That’s what advertising is now. Just cause you want to make TV commercials doesn’t mean it makes the client money
I didn’t say all advertising is social. I know clients still make commercials because I fast forward through them like everyone else. What I’m saying is influencers move more product then tv ads

I believe influencers can be helpful. I also believe bad clients can’t see past them.

Worst is when they can't see past anything other than influencer marketing but also ask you to work with an influencer they know.
So now, you're working with someone who is just their friend instead of someone who could be best for the audience that you're trying to reach.
Ohhhh yeah. A few big multi-brand clients decided to go for the clicks and away from the branding.
