PE to HF - harder than it seems?
Hi Fishes, Currently I am working in Kolkata for past 3 years. I am not a fan of the humid weather in Kolkata. Whenever I go out, its sweaty.. I have an opportunity to shift my workplace to Hyderabad. I want to know about Hyderabad weather month wise..
Weather is only the deciding factor to move. Anyone who has lived in both the cities for more than a year.. Cognizant Tata Consultancy Capgemini IBM Infosys

I always just sat down with my kids and read out loud. As I was reading the words my finger would move under them so they knew what word I was saying. When a word was repeated (which is quite often in starter books) I would ask them what word it was and have them sound it out.
I didn't use anything fancy or structured and all four of my kids were reading second grade level by the time they got into kindergarten.
This is what I did. Read out loud to them and often. Be enthusiastic about reading (I can’t wait to read about xyz with you) Any topic they show interest in, amazon prime those books to your door. Made it fun and no pressure and before you know it they’re reading effortlessly. I still read out loud to my kids (9 and 6 yo) even though they’re both advanced readers for their age, just the books are now chapter books lol. It keeps the association with books as positive and fun
Get the book: Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons. If they’re not quite ready for the rigor of that - the LoveEvery system is also quite good, but unnecessarily expensive.
Thirding “teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons”. Worked great for my 2 kids. My husband has sold like 12 copies of this book recommending it to friends. Spring for the spiral bound version!
Hooked on Phonics did the job with all three of my kids. They need to understand sounds.
Does your child know lower case letters and sounds?
Rising Star
Doe’s she know all the letter sounds, esp corresponding with letter id ? I’d continue with that. There’s so many skills that are fundamental for reading, personally I’d work on those fundamental skills
I’d also work on basic math concepts such as counting and move into count by 2s even if using a visual number line. Don’t forget kids learn numbers/basic math concepts in kd but that wasn’t your question
Also if you want your child to learn how to read. Read to your child, every night. People pooh pooh this idea way too much, including me when my kids were little. See if your child can comprehend what you’re reading; ask questions like, what do we think Johnny is going to do next ? Who did so and so go to the store with? Why do you think the cat did that? That’s listening for comprehension which is going to go further in her learning to read. Most 5yo do not read. In addition to reading with comprehension give her visual books/picture book. Ask your child to tell you a crazy story about what’s going on. Then you tell your child a crazy story of what’s going on, have fun with it bc this encourages your child’s investment in the book which you want for reading. And is a great bonding activity
Also, work on your child’s printing, spelling of full name, bday , phone number- skills that your child will work on in kd, and it’s a necessity that our kids know their name, address, phone (not all in kd). It also helps with word recognition/identification vs just letter id
I have 3 kids- oldest is an avid avid reader, and 2 kids who do not enjoy reading. All have professional jobs. Honestly I wish I knew as much as I do now. Helping out in kindergarten rooms/observing students really taught me things I could have used with my sons. Oh well
If they like electronics, use the app teach your monster how to read. The accent is a bit weird, kiwi or Aussie or something, but otherwise great. We limited screens with our kid so he felt like he was fooling us by playing with the screen more than we would normally allow and we felt like we were fooling him into reading.
I used Reading.com to support his reading development and found it very effective. Do you have any recommendations for math apps suitable for children (5 yr old)
