Was at GT for 8 years and just moved (2 months ago) to a top 300 firm. The wlb is good, but everything else is not. For example, 1) their work papers are in PDF, 2) I have no support. I have had to learn their softwares pretty much by myself, 3) the office is closed off. Everyone just sits in their offices with their doors shut. I was promised a lot of partner interaction and coaching… how long should I stick this out?

Wtf is a top 300 firm? Don’t they stop ranking at some point?

What do you mean their workpapers are in PDF. Like they don’t use excel or any web based programs to build out workpapers? How do they survive peer review?

like

It’s hell. I created a workpaper to tie out a tax return the other day, but I was told to print it to PDF by the managing director for her to review. I asked why she couldn’t review it in Excel, and I was told that she couldn’t tie any of my figures out (I created additional tabs in the worksheet with all of the support). I literally printed my excel worksheet into PDF and sent it to her.

Literal insanity

thats the trade off for better WLB…….

How good is the WLB and pay?

I can tell you it won’t get better. I’m not sure what you expected going to such a small firm, but try to wait it out a year and return to GT.

PDF????????? 😱

I started a new job as an “office manager” at the end of January. The duties seem to align more with those of an EA, and I’m ok with that. Except my boss is a control freak. He scolds me over every little thing, how I load the dishwasher, maybe I didn’t push my chair in. Last week he told me I needed to work on my appearance. I was shocked. I bought all new clothes from Ann Taylor that are perfectly acceptable for business casual. He hates me. Move on ASAP or try to stick it out ?

Hi All. Looking for thoughts on vertical expertise and whether it’s just a good sales tool or whether anyone has considered structuring the company in this format because it drives stronger work? I’ve always been fairly anti vertical because I think it stifles ideas and thinking, but you can always have people that specialize that you pull in when having bespoke industry knowledge can help. What do others think? Do clients want this from their partners?

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

Why do leaders keep comparing how “good”the new staff/seniors have it because they make more money starting out then they did and working 55 hours is better than the 70-80 hours they used to work? Instead they should compare what options they have available to them and what their goals are.

History of my firm: small (7 employees, two interns), was a single CPA show for 20 years. Cont.

Through a lot of comp discussions I heard a lot of talk of “making you whole” when things get better. Am I drinking the kool-aid by believing this? Is this just meant to prevent further questions that the firm does not know the answer to?
