We collectively decided as a unit to decline the upcoming morale-booster pizza party and asked for the funds to be used for a new breakroom microwave instead. Management acted like we were staging a coup, but the old microwave literally smells like electrical fire. Is it toxic to demand functional equipment over a slice of cold cheese pizza?

Pizza the unhealthy options My work did hotdogs or pizza . It is a cheap way of saying that they appreciate their employees. Management would buy cake and donuts too while they received bonuses for our excellent care.

I don't think that is toxic at all. I actually think that was a great idea of how the funds could be used for everyone. These companies don't realize that pizza doesn't motivate us.

like

They probably have coupons or gift cards for pizza. So that pizza party won’t cost them any real money. But doing tangible improvements in the break room would cost real dollars.

like

gosh - they could go to Best Buy

Let me guess… was it a female manager… I worked 20 years in a male dominated field and never suffered as much than with female managers…

😂

Not in the slightest, I’ve ran into similar issues; specifically, we decided instead of spending money on pizza or other food products, management should just deposit the extra funds in our paycheck (they had just finished touting record-breaking income for the previous FY) and their reaction was very similar to your scenario.

like

Why do they always think that pizza is the cure for everything, if it is, please send it to the white house and end the war...

Worse comes to worse depending on how big the unit is you working in, even though the hospital should provide one or wherever you work, look for a microwave that’s desirable for the department and make a fund with the amount of people in there whether it be one dollar from everybody or five bucks if management rejects the idea of a new microwave that could be an option even though it shouldn’t be

like

Then turn in the receipt to management for reimbursement, lol

likefunnyhelpful

I'd let the old microwave catch fire and let the fire department scream at your management.

Managers at hospitals are made up of the Peter Principle . They cannot in any way make an intelligent decision without saying mother may I . I don't know where they got the idea that people want pizza especially when it usually ends up being cold by the time you can eat it but there is no respect coming from this nurse

like

I definitely think that as far as the money goes, it would go a lot further to have a new microwave, but I also agree with other people in that your idea was not their idea. So they may not go for it, but I would pull for you.

like

Wish they'd realize pizza is not a motivator. Bigger paychecks are. Also, giving a gift card once a year for a pizza place is not very useful when you and/or co workers have health issues that preclude them from eating pizza. A gift card to a grocery store or general merchandiser would be much more useful,

like

Not toxic at all and am not surprised the management is acting like this. A microwave doesn’t cost much these days they are making it sound as they are investing in a new medical equipment. My hospital also doesn’t buy basic supplies and have of the stuff in my office came from my money. when I leave I will take all that with me.

like

It is toxic to have to ask for functional equipment.

likehelpful

We had the same issue at my old job. Asking for a microwave should not be a problem, throw in a new refrigerator too.

like

I would have loved this idea as a female Mgr at my last clinic. The owners of the practice said each dept mgr could have $100/month to buy food treats for their employees to keep them motiviated but when I asked if I could get $300 at the end of each quarter to buy GC for my staff, I was vetoed. I no longer work there lol.,

like

Shoot. They may even save money if they try to find one on marketplace. That's what we did.

like

Try to get your Docs to buy it. They use it too.
And an anonymous “concern” about an electrical odor with the microwave to Building Engineering might get it at least checked out and the odor resolved.
Don’t suppose it has (or could acquire) any frayed wires that could be worrisome.
Good luck

Hospital should care about their EEs health. Pizza isn’t very healthy imo. The usage of funds should be decided by the EEs since it’s for morale boost. These managers are on a power-trip?

The microwave is wreaked with chemicals when used is a health problem. The managers need to get their ducks together and not get all worked up stuck on the idea of pizza is the only option.

like

Not at all. Great suggestion. Management should do both.

I would settle for a working bathroom on my unit, lol. Ours has been out of service for right at two years

Not at all! A properly functioning work area with properly functioning equipment can be a huge morale booster also!
