We have every tool to work remotely and no drop in productivity. But if I’m not physically in the office at 8pm, I get subtle comments about commitment or side-eyes from partners who still think face time equals loyalty. It’s so frustrating because clients don’t care where I am as long as the work gets done. Why does this profession cling so hard to the illusion that sitting at your desk is proof you’re valuable?

How are 1st year litigation associates dealing with WFH? I’ve been having terrible anxiety/panic attacks, and pretty sure my billables wont exceed 110 for April. I have a partner that calls me multiple times a day to talk about updates on our cases. Sometimes just to ask “anything to update me on?” He’s known across all of the associates for doing this. Most of the calls repeat information I’ve already provided in emails to him or the client. I normally bill this time as “strategize on” or “consider XYZ in further of” and it keeps getting appealed. We have motion sensor lights in my office and the sensor is far from my desk. Consequently, if I'm on a long WebEx, the lights go out and it's embarrassing. The building won't change the sensor.
