We have every tool to work remotely and no drop in productivity. But if I’m not physically in the office at 8pm, I get subtle comments about commitment or side-eyes from partners who still think face time equals loyalty. It’s so frustrating because clients don’t care where I am as long as the work gets done. Why does this profession cling so hard to the illusion that sitting at your desk is proof you’re valuable?

Because boomers gonna boom

Face time is an outdated metric that persists out of habit and culture, not logic. You might try proactively communicating your availability and deliverables to counter the perception, but ultimately, some firms just won’t evolve.

… 8 PM?

Honestly, I would show up with bells on when it counts, be very visible at meetings, etc, and go home whenever you want. Unless the people that you work with are truly heinous, these comments rarely translate into anything that impacts comp or your ability to make partner down the road. At the end of the day, it’s mostly a numbers game. I have never once heard a high biller demeaned because they billed a lot of their time at home.

The boomers will eventually be gone and those types of “loyalty” attitudes will be forever gone.

I work at a similar firm and while I am usually in the office, I will show up at 10 if I want and leave at 3 if I want to. It was liberating to stop caring about these kind of subjective things.

How are 1st year litigation associates dealing with WFH? I’ve been having terrible anxiety/panic attacks, and pretty sure my billables wont exceed 110 for April. I’ve been super stressed about it and don’t know how to move on to May with the proper mindset to make up for as much time missed as possible. CA courts are still closed, and I’m worried I won’t be able to exceed (or even meet) my May goal after April.
