We just hired someone who only talks about law school, like being a paralegal is a temporary shame spiral. I’m proud of this role. I like being the one who makes the work actually happen. I don’t think we get enough credit for choosing this path as a career in itself. Anyone else feel weirdly judged for not moving on?

The law school comments used to bother me, too, but eventually I realized they wouldn’t ask if they didn’t think I was capable of being an attorney. And that’s a compliment. Remember that American culture in general is all about “what’s next”. You’re perfectly capable and valuable exactly as you are. Even the best attorney is only half as functional/effective without great admin support.

As a legal assistant, I’ve been asked countless times if I’m considering law school, as if this is only acceptable as a “starter” job or stepping stone. I personally love the 9-5 schedule, not having to check email at all hours of the night and on vacation, and not having all of the extra stress of being an attorney. I’m proud of the work I do, and I make a good living.
We also NEED people in admin and paralegal roles. If firms only had attorneys, things would be vastly different. I’ve worked with attorneys who literally can’t type on a keyboard, so they’d really struggle without support staff… That was long but my point is that we are valuable and some people might not see that but that’s not important.

Will it look like I took the easy way out if I chose my segment? They know it’s my current audience and has been for 8 yrs. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Additional Posts in Paralegals

Has anyone dealt with a lack of praise from attorneys? I'm not someone who needs to hear "good job" all the time, but we just got a huge deal closed that I worked really hard on and had a lot of overtime. And once it closed, the lead attorney praised the other attorneys, and said nothing about me or my work. I might just be overly sensitive, but it kind of stung. Thoughts?

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

How do you know when it is time to move on. I am the only litigation paralegal billing over 2,500 a year consistently. Love the boss I work the most for but that person has grown distant. Staff reviews were supposed to be complete this week and no one has mentioned mine. Underpaid by about $30k per market value. Torn and confused.

I am a paralegal interested in making the jump from litigation to Worker's Compensation. I don't have recent experience in WC but recall it was a lot of form work. Any Worker's Compensation experts here that can offer an opinion (is it a heavy lift) and run me thru some of your daily activities? I am in New Jersey. Thanks!

I’m getting messages from recruiters for Sr. Corporate Paralegal roles but all of my experience is in litigation. I have 6 years experience as a paralegal. Should I move forward with this? Not sure if I’m qualified.

Are there any fully remote lawfirms, ie you don't have to live in the state they have offices? I recently left a large lawfirm to go in-house which came with a huge paycut that is not going to be sustainable long term, but needed a remote position to be able to move. I'd like to keep my current job part-time but get back in a lawfirm too.

Currently a paralegal at a small start up financial services company been there for just a little over a year. I wear “multiple hats” but more recently I’ve done a lot of PM work and some BA work. My position title is changing soon but I’m wondering how helpful that would be for wanting to go into PM work at a tech company. Anyone have any career pivot advice? (Also I’m only 1.5yrs old in my career so I’m definitely still new, and I have previous experience as a project assistant).
