This is not something to be proud of. When you don’t pay people for their work, your talent pool is restricted to rich kids whose parents can afford to float them for the summer.
This is illegal :)

Yea, true, students do have to pay for the credits. But the whole reason they attend college is to land a well paying job so that the college tuition is worth it. It’s supposed to be an “investment.” Now, granted, many graduates are stuck with loans and perhaps don’t land the high paying job they anticipate or hoped for. At that point, you can choose to pivot careers or industries.
I will agree that OP did not word the post correctly and should not have said it’s an efficient way to get free labor. Agreed that at the end of the day, these are still working people and would be nice if they were compensated even if it’s not the most competitive or highest salary. However, my original comment was directed towards this AlixPartner1, who said “this is illegal.” It is NOT illegal. Perhaps controversial or unfair, yes, but definitely not illegal. Unpaid internships are legal because they are specifically for college students who are getting credit. The internship becomes a “class” they are taking in college and that’s what makes the unpaid part a legal thing.
“… has proven extremely valuable in procuring free labor,” is just a wild thing to read on a Wednesday morning.
I think it’s a wild thing to read ANY morning!
God forbid you pay for your labour, but hey that might mean your profit margin doesn’t grow fast enough for next quarter.
