We saw some really sharp “software tools” engineers get let this past year go due to AI. Not all, but most of them. Example: monitoring tools, reports tools, etc… full teams are no longer needed. I have been in smaller companies where there was 1 admin for a tool like Splunk. Then to larger companies where there’s an entire team of 4-6 engineers for said tool. Fast forward to now;there’s 1 or 2 eng’s for said tool. Fully relying on AI will not be sustainable with 1 or 2 engineers. Thoughts?

To add… There’s two many departments that may need a tool like splunk that need it to do something specific. I see burn out and turnover which can lead to poor support. I’m not knocking AI. I use it all the time as leverage; mostly in my personal life. Happy New Year!

There was some reporting about this back in the fall, with stories pointing out that jobs were being augmented and thus consolidated. I recall in the NY Times there were quotes from people at Amazon saying the tech workers were now being treated as badly as the warehouse workers. There's going to be a lot of disruptions in the next few years and it's quite unclear how we'll all come out of this.

Yeah so much uncertainty. The successful companies are the ones that will be able to adapt back and forth. Hire engineers if it doesn’t work out and then slowly get rid of them again. If a company only goes one way then it will fail.

Do you think you and your significant other should have similar personalities? My significant other and I are doing long distance and I feel like when I FaceTime with him, I emote more and show interest by asking more questions but from his end, he doesn’t always have a reaction or just nods, and it makes me feel like he’s uninterested. On his end he sees it as he’s comfortable.

Potentially dumb question here: I am starting law school soon and will not be employed (net income of $0 assuming I don’t get a good summer internship next summer). I will be relocating out of state from NY to FL in December. My current role does not allow flexibility to work remote and our offices in FL have no tech roles for transfer. I have 5+ YOE as a product owner in M&E and looking to break into the Digital space as a PM. I’ve been applying and interviewing with no luck and multiple rejection as it seems hiring has slowed down. Anyone know of companies hiring? I would love to connect.

Looking for a remote/hybrid/onsite (Calgary,Alberta) job for my boyfriend who got almost 5 years of experience in proposal writing, RFP, RFI and bid management for a civil engineering firm. He also got an MBA, non drinker, non smoker, clean driving abstract and very polite. He gave out tons of cv in indeed job posters for the past 5 months, ends up becoming the filler candidate, took a huge toll in his mental health and we are going through some very rough patches. I have an offer to do some consulting for a company based out of the UK (I am in the US). The job would not go through a consulting company but would be directly with the company. I have not done any consulting before so I am not sure how it works, what I would need to set up (they mentioned that I would start a LLC and bill them directly, no idea how to do that), how to determine the tax implications of this, or what hourly rate I would expect. Can anyone offer advice?
