I would say, "
Great choice, but don't let it consume you. Plan the day, don'tlet the day take over. Make sure your students know you care about them and that they have value and worth. Don't let bitter, angry teachers destroy your zest for teaching!"
Honestly - I’d ask if they’re sure and if they have a plan for how to afford life because a starting teacher salary isn’t going to cut it pretty much anywhere in this country unless you have a partner or roommates to share housing costs with.
Don’t.
I would offer a congratulations to all of them. They’ve entered what can be a satisfying and joyous journey. Teaching is a noble profession. I would also say that teaching is a hard career path. My first suggestion before entering this profession is for the students to ask themselves…do they like children? This may seem simple, but I’ve worked with many teachers who clearly don’t like children, and regret their decision everyday. Kids realize who doesn’t want to be there too.
I would tell these woman to be flexible in planning, be organized in their approach, pay attention in their child psychology class, know that not all of them will get teaching jobs in Kindergarten or 1st grade, make work priorities that make sense, and to enjoy the goofy situations that come up. Tell them that even though the pay is not as good as other jobs, they will be paid more by the gratitude and smiles of their students. That they are shaping the adults of the future. Give them routine, discipline and a safe place to land.
Michigan, I am saying there are other rewards. I think people can read between the lines on this one.
