Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Internal anything is always the first to go. I specifically only look for client facing, and avoid sub-contractor on top of that.
Internal has a very very hard time showing $ value driven. Client facing you just show them your contract. It’s pretty easy to choose which analytics team to lay off.
I'm confused on what you mean by "internal facing" in industry? Like not working on products that are customer-centric? That's not necessarily a problem if you're supporting strategic initiatives with data. Data touches everywhere in the org, depending on the operating model...unless it's a nested team under a functional head. Depends on the org, but the enterprise data org model is very visible and often gets C-suite eyes if set up right. Being on a nested team under like 3 layers of functional leadership can be BS and limiting though. As someone in this space I'd want to work in an org that's nested either direct under the CIO/CTO or has a CDO ideally.
So for example the place I used to intern at was the enterprise analytics department of a big firm. There were boat loads of internal teams inside just making dashboards for different departments in the firm
