Well thanks for offer. For now I’m going to pursue an opportunity with a higher salary.
Uh, benefits are baseline, it’s actually demeaning that they point to that as “extra cash” like the person they’re about to hire is a moron.
If the x = xo + vot + 1/2at2 | (Vƒ)2 = (Vo)2 + 2ax formula above doesn't work just listen to @LB1
Laugh —> BahaHAhaHAhaHahaa then slide your terms across the table.
Benefits ARE worth thousands. But they should be considered along with salary as part of a total compensation package, not as part of salary itself (benefits can and do change). This means you have to know how much the benefits are worth, at your current company as well as the potential new one.
First, monetize your current benefits. How much you're paying for insurance (health, dental, life, etc). Then look at your deductibles, maximums, co-pays, etc. Look at how much your current agency is contributing to 401k, parking, stock options, etc. Figure out how much money your current vacation days are worth. Put a dollar value on each line item. Then do the same with the prospective employer's benefits, and compare each line item to determine if you're looking at a gain or a deficit by jumping. There are usually differences in benefits.
Bonuses should not be figured into your salary negotiations, as they're usually optional on the company's part.
Once you have figured out whether the benefits package is a gain or loss, then look at how much you're willing to move on salary. If you're looking at taking a 5k hit on benefits, I'd push for a higher salary number. If you're going to gain 5k in benefits by moving, I might be a little more flexible on my salary number.
In the end, if you're not comfortable with the total compensation package, including the salary, walk.
Thats right. Listen to @LB1. State your number and wait. If they dont match what you want, walk. Cya!
Show them your research... if you know you’re being underpaid have some ammo that proves that.
Update. I did this and HR yelled at me saying it was distasteful for me to even think to tell the person who was going to be my boss that I had an offer for more money elsewhere when they as HR already said it was not negotiable.
