What are some suggestions on countering without sounding greedy? Phrases that make counters sound collaborative, not confrontational.

Try, “I’m excited about the role and would love to align on a package that reflects my experience.” Keeps it positive. I have tried this too “Is there flexibility here?” or “Could we explore room for adjustment?”

Seems simple and like a good starter to a conversation. Thanks

I saw one example: “Based on market data and the value I bring, I was hoping we could revisit the offer.”

Love this one!

If the salary is below your walkaway rate (the minimum amount you can take without needing to find another job), you could say something like: "Thank you so much for the offer. I'm really excited about the opportunity. My walkaway rate is x. Would you be able to meet that salary? I would really love the opportunity to work for you, and I can assure you that if we can agree on this, I will exceed your expectations." If the salary is within your range but too low, you could say: "Thank you so much for the offer. I'm really excited about the opportunity. I was really hoping to make x. Would it be possible to meet that salary? I would really love the opportunity to work here, and if we can agree on this, I will exceed your expectations." If you want to make this negotiation even stronger, make a job-matching matrix. It's a document with three columns. The first one lists all the requirements/qualifications for the job. The second column lists the issues that would come up if each requirement weren't met. Finally, the third column lists your relevant experience for each requirement. If you can show in the document how you meet and exceed the job requirements, you have a much better chance of negotiating the salary. When you speak with the hiring manager (ideally on the phone or in an interview), start by expressing your desired salary, and then tell them that you put together this document that shows how you meet and exceed the requirements for the job. After that, you can ask for a higher salary. I hope this helps! You've got this!

Hello all! Has anyone completed the Professional Certificate in Product Management program with Kellogg Northwestern?

I’m currently a technical project manager looking to pivot into Product Management. I’m wondering - is this investment worth it? Interested to hear your thoughts.

For context, I graduated in December 2021 with a business degree and have 1-1/2 professional experience in tech/marketing/project management.

Thanks in advance!

Partners, need some career advice. I'm in a niche BU at a big 4 focusing on risk related to certain cutting edge innovations in my industry (intentionally being vague). I'm being heavily recruited by a competitor firm to jump. I have just over 6 YOE, looking to promote in a little over a year (which would still be early at my current firm). To clarify, I'm not looking to leave, but will never say never. Firm looking to poach talks big game RE comp (potential to double my high 100s salary). Cont.

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

Anybody know salary range for VP Operations for GS in SLC?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
