There are a few things you can do -
1. Understand how severance is calculated. It’s typically x weeks for every y years of service. Make sure you understand your firm’s policy
2. what will be your last date of employment and how that impacts your benefits and when does COBRA kick in
3. what information will be provided to future employees as part of a background check
4. what happens to your 401k match for the partial year?
5. What happens to your vested 401k balance and any pension plan contributions?
6. When will be unpaid PTO, last paycheck and severance be paid out?
7. What assistance does the firm provide for job search? Resume review services?
8. Kind of a stretch - can you be an active but unpaid employee for 3 months so you can show employed while doing your job search
The last one has liability risk for the company. Doubt any wise company in US would allow it. This is different than say BCG that gives people a few months time while still paid to find a new job.
did you leave or were you laid off? There is a difference in the approach. In general, severance is not mandatory. This puts you on the disadvantage.
