I think my doctor’s rule was never more than 1 per hour and you should still be able to drive. If you meet both of those, virtually all of the alcohol has been metabolized out before getting to your milk. But also I was a super lightweight after no alcohol all pregnancy so it was quite a while before I wanted more than one drink.
And you can always pump and dump if you have more than that.
You'll likely not want much in the beginning anyways since you'll be so tired, plus any tolerance you had before will be gone.
But from what I remember, it was 1 ish an hour, if you're good to drive than you're good to feed baby. If I ever felt on the fence about it, I would use previously pumped milk for that feeding for peace of mind.
You only need to pump and dump if you're engorged, it does not help you process the alcohol out of your milk. And many people repurpose any 'tainted' milk for non consumption purposes.
They also have milk test strips that test for alcohol, but I heard they were pricey, so may not be worth using all the time.
Just to chime in, the purpose of pump and dump for low producers like me is to maintain supply when a baby is given a bottle for a feeding.
8 weeks post partum with my first. I wait until right after I feed the baby before consuming any alcohol and then pump after 2-3hrs and use a breast milk alcohol test strip to confirm there is no alcohol in the milk before giving it to the baby. I’ve been able to consume one small glass of wine or two glasses of champagne with no issue. That being said, I’m still so exhausted that I’ve only drank a couple of times so far as the additional effort of having to pump and test the milk just hasn’t been worth it to me most of the time.
I'm 7wks postpartum, and I'm so exhausted that I've barely had the energy to have more than 1 drink. It might take care of itself 😂
I try to stick to one drink every 3-4 hours but I don’t wait the 4 hours before feeding. I’ve heard it’s best to drink while or just after feeding so it’s mostly metabolized before the next feeding.
Really not a big deal if you’re drinking in moderation. I am pregnant with my third and while I’m looking forward to having a drink I’m usually so mentally out of it that it doesn’t sound appealing for a while.
I ended up having a teeny tiny glass of red wine most nights with my dinner. I don’t remember if it was right before or after a feeding as recommended but very very small glass. It was nice to have the taste again even if it didn’t get me buzzed in the slightest.
I followed the “if you can drive you can BF” guidance.
Same !
Best time to drink is while you’re breastfeeding (if you’re alone and not being judged). Haha
Be careful bc less alcohol will make you much more drunk since you haven’t drank in a while.
Same direction as pregnancy and caffeine - everything in moderation. You’ll be fine. Those pamphlets are silly and overly restrictive.
I personally decided not to drink at all! But a little should not be a problem as folks above indicated
My pediatrician said there is no amount known to be safe, so not drinking while I BF.
