I use both GS and Excel. As far as spreadsheet functionality there isn’t much difference. The one huge advantage of GS is sharing, collaborating and linking files. Because GS is cloud native, in my experience it is superior in that context.

Trash. It’s annoyingly rudimentary
There's some cool things. I like the query formula and the translate formula. Collaborating with others simultaneously is also a much smoother experience, I couldn't tell you how many times I've had to discard my changes on an Excel file cause others have it open and their auto save conflicts with mine.
The sharing feature is helpful

I like GS for some things. I prefer appscript over VBA and I agree with Les that linking sheets, collaboration, these things work better in the Google environment. I also appreciate how well all the Google apps work together.
If I’m building a complex model though, GS is slow and glitchy.
