What do you all see as the better option between a top echelon plaintiffs personal injury firm in Houston and a compliance role at AVEVA, a well established international company? My two year lawyer anniversary is in two months. Pay at the PI firm is $100k plus what I bring in and at the company is about 120-140, not sure yet. Please help.

Really depends on what you value. You’ll make more at the PI firm and will have the potential to make a lot more, whereas you’ll probably stay at that level in the compliance role but your WLB will be much better.

Your quality of life and work life balance will most likely be better with the compliance role (although every company is different). However, your salary ceiling will most likely be higher at the firm. Again, it depends on the firm, though.

I’m a first year doing PI in Houston and have a great work life balance. That depends on the firm and your role. I would really research that.

like

Is it one of the larger firms?

Not sure how referrals in Texas work but Does “what you bring in” to the pi firm include cases that are referred to you by other lawyers, in which case the firm must pay a referral fee, or does it only include cases you generate without an attorney referral? Big question you need to answer. If it’s truly one of the better firms, then chances are tons of their cases come in on referrals. If you do get credit for cases referred to you, then what is your percent cut?

These are the correct questions.

Thanks, guys.

First PI case. Just got defendant’s discovery back. I asked for all policies to see any potential coverage and was just sent back the 2-page dec page. Is that normal? What is my response/objection to this?

Hi everyone - I'm contemplating an offer from a large PI firm. I'm a little more than halfway through completing my 2nd year of practice, and I'm currently at a small firm with a low salary that's just no longer cutting it.

The offer from the large firm is for a pre-suit position, base salary of $100K - is this salary pretty standard for this kind of position?

Any insight is appreciated, thank you!!

In an auto accident trial, can you inform the jury in any way that the at-fault driver had insurance? I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

Any good or bad firm culture to speak of?
Is it impossible to actually earn a respectable incentive bonus?
Am I going to have some partner come cut me out of any cases where I might actually make a solid fee?
