“AI detecting software” is garbage. If you write something that’s grammatically correct, it’ll label it AI. Just one of a number of reasons why educators stopped using [it].
Haha. I believe it.
I mean if someone is prompting AI well enough to “fool” you into thinking it’s good writing, I’d say they are using it effectively as a tool. Whereas if the writing sample reads to you like AI wrote it, then either the candidate is using AI in effectively or they’re not a good writer (or both)… do you really need software to tell you which it is?
No definitely not, but I’m curious if anyone has a tool that they like/recommend to verify it. I’m trying to get my HR team on board with not sending me candidates that use AI improperly - totally agree that if I can’t tell they’re using it correctly.
My company tries to avoid potential discrimination for entry level applicants and doesn’t let us preview candidates before they put interviews on our calendar. That’s when I see the writing sample and it feels like a waste of time to interview someone who I won’t hire based on this step in the process. Written communication is essential on my team and I want to see evidence that a human wrote it!
Reject them.
Sometimes I wish people would put their non sensical diatribes through ChatGPT before sending them. I would welcome that any day over deciphering streams of consciousness. I know that wasn’t the question but I just experienced that.
One could say the ones *not* using AI are inefficient and uninformed about industry trends. As long as they use it well, who cares.
Look at their portfolio, if you like it, interview them.
In the interview, acknowledge how hard it is to find jobs right now and acknowledge that they probably used AI to write the prompts because they are applying to 20+ postings a week and that is exhausting. Then ask them to rewrite the prompts w/o AI if they want to get a second interview.
Writing custom prompts for EVERY application just to get the first interview is exhausting and a little ridiculous considering how many applications it takes people just to land 1 interview. In all honesty, I would suggest incorporating the writing prompts after the first interview.
You’re the tool. Whether you can detect it or not should be enough to satisfy the quality of the work.
