Should I fear layoffs before even getting staffed as an experienced new joiner, or am I overthinking this?
I joined EY-Parthenon in NYC (Strategy, PE aligned) in mid October as a sr. Associate, coming from Europe, and have not yet been staffed (have been doing my best to network, but there just aren’t a lot of new engagements starting). I have 2 YOE with strategy consulting.

They’re a bunch of babies throwing a hissy fit and they’re trying to make a dumb political statement using all our lives as weapons fodder. They were never “defunded” as so many like to claim, they had $15 mil cut from their $238 mil budget and it was more than added back this year. They are essentially on strike and refusing to fill vacant positions and respond to calls.
Imagine applying for one of the most unloved positions out there. Quality candidates are being steered away from policing because the position has become demonized. We need to SUPPORT our police via funding and public opinion.
Don’t be smug. I can throw a book of statistics at you which tell a story of underfunding. And you would probably stick to desk work too if your every action was under a microscope for some kind of crime.
Police put their lives on the line for you. If you can’t respect that you’ll never get the police force you think you deserve.
The Portland police situation is a mess. They are understaffed and it’s almost impossible to fill the open positions because the laws make it very difficult for the few officers on the street to do their jobs. They are more likely to get in trouble than those arrested. The DA’s office is also understaffed; lawyers don’t want to work there either. So cops rarely see the people they collar get prosecuted. Then, as you can read above, the force doesn’t get respect from the community. Meanwhile, crime soars.
Sure they are. Would you risk death everyday for what they get paid? Like teachers, it’ll never be enough.
It'd be great if they'd spend more time actually working on the crime in our city, instead of just sweeping homeless people. I understand that a lot of their orders come from higher up, but damn.
Forgetting all of my first blush feelings, stances, and politics:
I very rarely see them. Additionally, as of 2021 only 18% of PPB live in the city limits. I believe proximity can bring some subtlety and small improvements to how the police interact with the community.
Bringing politics back in, I find them to be ineffectual brutes and we need top down reform.
They don't do anything - I'd say about 50% of the time when I'm out walking in the pearl/nob hill there's a new smashed storefront or car window. They will periodically clear the camps but then they come right back. It's also so much worse on the east side. Also under the 405 bridge between Quimby and Savier is a disaster. As a young woman I don't feel safe walking around and always carry pepper spray and am on high alert.
Crime is only going to continue to get worse if we keep enabling mentally unstable people to live on the sidewalk creating hazardous waste. It's not safe for anyone- including them- the police should be doing a better job of protecting everyone.
I don’t answer posts like this anymore. No one in this country really seems open to a calm debate. Same with fishbowl. It seems you get reported here for opposing anything in the slightest. In fact, my reply will probably get flagged.
I haven’t gone a day in the past two months without seeing at least one person blatantly run a red light. We’ve had five traffic deaths this year, gun violence continues to rise, parts of downtown continue to be unsafe, we have abhorrent response times, and the police have thrice told a dear, octogenarian friend that they can’t come to her HOME INVASION because they’re busy and the burglar has already left. Oh, and the PPA tried to frame a city council member for a crime she didn’t commit?
So what’s the point? I don’t have a clue what they actually do, but it’s clear that they don’t spend much time enforcing the law. It’s a completely broken institution that should be torn down and completely re-thought.
They need to be abolished, like every police force everywhere, and replaced with community focused organizations and groups that center care, not incarceration
🤡
I honestly don't see police out much. I've lived in Portland for 3 years now and have only seen them on three occasions.
@CMO1: More focus on care is good. No police is a crazy idea. You can’t stop vandalism, theft, rape, and murder with community groups.
I wish I’d see them around the city occasionally
