The best rule of thumb is to wear what you would wear on a normal school day. If Friday is "spirit day" and the students get to wear school T-shirts or jerseys or their cheerleader uniforms, DON'T wear that.
I wear my most comfortable teaching appropriate outfit. For me that’s usually a swingy dress. Something that won’t be a distraction. We’ve had too many recent interviewees wear jeans, etc.
I have a business suit that I wear on interviews. It's professional and I feel pretty confident in it.
Even in California which is likely the most casual place ever I would still wear a dark suit skirt/slacks and a simple white blouse modest both in fit and cut. I have interviewed and hired many people over time and simple, professional, and modest is best. Always dress better than you would in a classroom setting as it shows respect for the profession.
I always go slightly more professional than I would normally wear. I wear dresses/slacks/cardigans/etc. on a normal day and dress it up slightly with a blazer or nice shoe (I wear sneakers like 90% of the time in the classroom), maybe a bracelet or necklace that makes me feel nice. The goal is to hit that comfort-calm-collected bullseye.
I have a a few shirt dresses that I wear, low-heeled shoes in black or brown, minimal jewelry (smallish gold, silver, pearl earrings), and a firm handshake, bright smile, and eye contact. No perfume or heavy makeup, and be sure your hair is groomed (clean and neat).
