Got messaged by a C3 . ai recruiter. Read that wlb is bad and that the interview process is absurdly long, but the Glassdoor reviews are 4.2 and can't find actual hours worked posted by anyone. How's the culture really? I'd be aiming for DS consulting, something more functional but with DS/ML concepts as my differentiator.

Data scientists think Data Engineers are earning more and have more opportunities and vice versa😀
And reality maybe except handful of people everyone is doing some s**ty work which they don’t enjoy.

If you want to make bank, be like one of the last 16 COBOL programmers left or support some monoluthic Scala monstrosity in a legacy DE environment. Python programmers are cheap, expendable, and trainable. I mean, you'll drive yourself to drink by supporting shitty codebases, but RICH! until they convert your code.
Having just been on the market, I'm a data scientist but a lot of the positions I get contacted about are more data engineering positions. So I'm not sure that these are really separate. I do think that there are fewer solely data science positions than maybe a few years ago, like where someone is handing you the data and you're just doing analysis. (Or they're on the BI or product side, where it's analysis plus a lot of other skills in those areas.)
Great for both, more jobs for data engineers in total probably, but there are also fewer qualified data scientists. Either way you can't go wrong in the short and mid-term.
The market for data science has become oversatured and competition for the highest paying jobs is ridiculous. DE is the way to go.
Well DE is a dependency for DS. In order to do DS uou need to have done DE. But you dont need DS to do DE.
I think market is hot for both of you have some experience. DE gets paid bit more in general.
I’m often labeled as a data engineer in my engagements. How does that normally differ from a data scientist?
