New to Fishbowl?

I thought for sure I was going to be a sports agent. I spent my summer after freshman and sophomore years interning at a boutique agency in town. Two weeks before the start of the summer after my junior year, the agency called to tell me they were shutting down and that I no longer had an internship for that summer.
I then went to work for a boutique consulting firm, then got into BCG post mba, and now work in VC
I was an incredibly pissed off 21 year old when my internship and assumed future job got canceled, but very thankful for my parents for encouraging me to start something new

I thought I was going to be an automotive engineer, and I did that for a little while, but it wasn’t as glamorous as I thought, then I went into aerospace thinking it would be better, but it was worse, except I got to work with some consultants, I got curious about their job, researched that career a little, applied to McK and here I am discussing points and credit cards on Fishbowl.
I thought I was gonna be an astronomer and now I make gant charts

Or maybe y’all had a lot more clarity about your future paths than I did at age 18 😅

Started pre-med focused because I grew up in the hospital thanks to my parents’ careers, fell in love with the Constitution thanks to an amazing Con Law professor (undergrad) so actually created a Constitutional History major. After graduating, spent time in PR and Marketing to get into the business world, then found myself with an opportunity to build a Government Relations function for the first time for my company based in part on my major, amazingly enough. Have now been doing that VERY happily in health technology policy for fifteen years. I am lucky enough to have found two passions - the way our Govt works (yes, I know that seems odd) and health policy - and be able to couple them together.
The liberal arts prepare you well for life - and opportunities! Love to connect and chat if possible.

I was going to be a swe. I am now a swe.
Started as a ChemE major, had a love of finance so i switched and worked internal audit at a bank. Hit b school then to consulting. Besides the first part though my path felt pretty natural (not huge changes in direction)
I was going to do pharmacy like my parents but studied finance instead and now I work in private equity

Big switch! That’s a great example

Pre-Med to Psych to Non profit work to MBA to Project Management. Lol late bloomer
A1 similar kind of meandering path that I think is going to land me in a nice role I’m very excited about. No shame in taking the scenic route.

I did pre-med, went to b school and chose finance work, got into law school…still in finance.
Thought I was going to be a career military pilot. Ended doing my initial contract and exiting to consulting
I went from Law Enforcement to Sales. Some times things don’t go the way you envisioned them to go. Sometimes the industry you wanted to go into as a kid isn’t all it seems to be when you are an adult. It’s best to go after what you want, but if you do something different, it doesn’t mean you failed. It just means you found something you are happy with doing.

This really turned out to be a wholesome thread on career pivot. It is really nice to see how ppl changed their career and even though things may not seem right at start, they found ways eventually..

I wasn’t sure what to expect but there have been some great and unexpected pivots.
