What have been your experiences with outsourcing/offshoring in-house legal work? (eg on the commercial side - sales contracts, NDAs, DPAs). Not really my call to make, but I have found the work product disappointing and I wonder if we would be better off investing in better software solutions.

Using AI makes a huge difference with those examples. My paralegal ran a DPA through GCAI today and it provided detailed comments on each section and made two language recommendations to add, which were actually solid. A legal professional still needs to review, but honestly so many of these contracts can be handled by a non-lawyer contract professional and even more so with responsible use of AI.

We have used niche law firms to do these, they have been good. Think like a 5-10 person shop. They look at all the small contracts, we use big law for the major transactions

smart

AI can get it all done with the right set up

funny

i dont get it, why would an off shore attorney who is not trained in the US do a better job than a us attorney who has legal ai to streamline the mundane contracts and uses ai to better frame and structure the more complex deals. are you worried about tokens or letting a jr attorney run thru all your tokens only to generate ai slop?

I’m with you, I think offshoring legal is silly. There’s a company-wide effort to offshore and reduce US headcount as much as possible, and our legal department has also been a victim of this. We have a general enterprise AI tool but nothing legal specific. I’m curious to hear others’ experiences with offshoring legal functions since that’s not something I’ve heard a lot about. In comparison I understand offshoring accounting functions has been very commonplace (at least according to my accountant friends)

What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far. Graduated in 2014. Base comp is $127.5k in the Philly area. I see salaries all over the place in this site and it’s hard to tell whether mine is competitive.

Have an interesting scenario. Holiday party season is approaching. At one of our parties (during working hours) there is an optional “talent show.” Employees can win door prizes. We have an entry that is a religious song - like one you would sing in church. I assume we need to let this employee perform this - or we are setting ourselves up for trouble. Likewise, if we permit this song, I assume we cannot compel attendance to the talent show. The talent show is part of a lunch thing.

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Need a sanity check here.

When I joined my current company, we were on a quarterly bonus structure with guaranteed payouts each quarter. This was, in fact, how the recruiter said he could meet my salary request.

The company just announced we are moving to annual payouts only, with no payments for 2023 until May 2024. There are no raises happening.

This amounts to 12% less money in my pocket in 2023 plus inflation.

Is this standard, or should I be looking for opportunities elsewhere?
