My teacher besties! I know that I have at least two friends and two mentors I can turn to on my bad days. They always have great advice on how to pull myself out of the negative spiral
My coworker and I were usually the last ones to leave the building most days. Every once in a while we would hit the doors on our way out and yelled, "I QUIT!!!" It felt great to say it out loud. Plus, we'd laugh about it every time.
Realizing that some of my students won’t know if they’ll have a place to lay down at night or supper or if their guardian will be at home. My bad days are nothing compared to the circumstances my kids have to deal with
Rereading fun and positive notes from students.
This is what I do to. I have a while box of all the notes and pictures given to me and I reread them when I'm struggling.
Writing/blogging about it! Taking the time to deal with those negative emotions and purge them can be just as important as talking about the good days
Knowing tomorrow is a new day
Turning the music up really loud on my car stereo and reminding myself that other people don't own my mood or feelings
Chocolate!
I always try to focus on one good thing that happened that day, no matter how small.
Thinking of all the good days and the sweet memories I had with my students.
Define bad days...
Seeing the student work I display in my room or taking time to just talk to my students. They remind me why I love my job.
Chocolate and notes I've received over the years from previous students telling me how much they appreciate me.
It depends on the day but usually it is a few things including special notes or drawings from my students; knowing that my smile or saying “I love you” might be the only one that they get all day but also the reverse—their smile or “I love you” back to me might be the only one that I get; listening to my favorite music on my iPad; and snuggling my dog whether she likes it or not. Do what works for you and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty about it.
I keep all of my positive notes. The best ones from students, and all good notes from admin. I need those on the toughest days. Then I will make sure to listen to my needs. I may need an extra polar pop just to get through, or ask someone to get dinner with me. I might need to shut the lights off and put headphones on during my prep. I’m always going to be the biggest supporter of me, and I can’t do my job well if I don’t take care of myself.
