What I really hate and can’t understand about this profession is the attorneys who think they are smarter than everyone else and that everyone else is subpar, especially when it comes to opposing counsel or attorneys from peer firms. It’s so toxic. I cringe when people on my teams talk about other firms like they’re all inept and stupid. They’re clearly not.

What’s not to understand? This profession attracts those sorts.

The skill set needed to scholastically make it into BL, vs the traits that make one insufferable as BL lawyer are pretty much the same…

You have misread this. Sometimes is an important qualifier here.

We should always be dunking on peer firms and asserting superiority, sorry I play for winners only lol

Hearing a partner refer to another (very reputable) firm's work product as "not worth the paper it was written on" while also using AI for literally everything is probably my favorite example of this so far.

As a litigator, the toxicity is what keeps me going lol

How so?

Watch out—those types are often talking internally like this as well. I can name a few firms like this.

I’ve been depressed for years now and this past week I lost a dog I’ve had for 15 years; he was one of the only bright spots in my life and I’ve just found it so hard to focus or motivate myself on anything after this. I genuinely feel like I’m at rock bottom, Idk if I’m crazy to feel that way bc of a dog but I used to be able to control this and put up a front but now my depression and anxiety are starting to leak into my work conversations completely unintentionally, I wish this would stop :(

Additional Posts in Big Law

I understand this might sound a little snobby but I'm not trying for it to come off that way. I've been around impressive people throughout my adult life. T-14 and big law have placed me in the company of some really accomplished individuals. It likely skewed the bar in terms of what I find as impressive.

My girlfriend's sister works at a Fortune 500 company and views herself as very accomplished. She's not a good person. I also don't find her impressive so I don't particularly try

After you are stealth laid off, other than job search, what do you do? I assume they won’t give you work and even if they do, you can politely decline? How do you feel about you are not progressing anymore and seeing other people progressing in their career? I have no intention to make partner, but still feel a bit stuck not doing that much.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

I’m a first year that’s inching toward second year. Partners in my group say “sometimes getting thrown into the deep end is the best way to learn.” However, I feel so lost. I feel like saying the above is just an excuse for not wanting to take the time to actually teach new associates.

I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through.
