What is the argument for buying a dog from a breeder? I have always adopted but curious about the positives of breeders.

If you want a show lineage or want only a specific breed. My parents did this for our dog when I was little. By contrast, my dog is a mutt that I found as a 2mo old pup drowning in a lake and pulled him out. He’s every bit as much a dog as one we paid too much for

like

Not that I'm advocating but you can also, in addition to what's already been mentioned, get and train from puppy.

I'd also mention that I also carve the "breeders" into typical breeding operations or "puppy mills" (multiple litters with the goal to make $) versus occasional/oops breeders. I'd be okay with the occasional/oops breeders.

Don’t do that. Ever. Breeders are the reason kill shelters exist

likefunny

Seeing as 99% of all dogs in my local shelters are some variation of pit, thank you for your service, A&M

I don't think there are any net positives in giving breeders money

like

That’s always been my initial reaction…

Breeders and Puppy Mills are not the same thing. Untwist your facts, y’all.

Breeders responsibly raise specific breeds of dog in alignment with criteria from AKC etc etc. A Puppy Mill pumps out as many animals as will fit in their closet.

If you want a specific breed, especially a breed that otherwise has a predisposition to genetic disorders when bred incorrectly, it is necessary to go to a breeder.

Adopting is great, I’m all for it, but don’t misunderstand the facts.

I think that the fault falls on the unethical folks actually doing the harm rather than on some honest joe that’s doing it right.

So I’ve done both - for years I be had rescue pit bulls with unknown history and in many cases behavioral issues. Wouldn’t change that. Loved every single one.

However more recently I had some pure breeds due to some special circumstances with my kid. Essentially you’re buying health and predictability and specific working traits. My dogs are exactly what we thought they would be. And for some situations that’s exactly what you need. Cave out to that - we bought from real breeders - people who breed responsibly, keep puppies until 4 months, only breed occasionally, and work on improving the breed.

So the point is - there’s room for both. There is not one answer. But I would encourage starting with why wouldn’t a shelter dog work for me?

like

The earliest you should separate a puppy from its mother is 8 weeks. Good breeders don’t do it until 12 weeks. These folks keep them an extra month to help them learn more and also train them a bit. As a result, they’re extremely well socialized and adjusted.

like

Because you get to get the specific breed you want, and have some insight into its history

like

Wanted a specific dog breed and so we went through a breed-specific rescue to adopt our little bud! The wait may be longer (it took us a few months) but I would recommend this route over a breeder. There are too many wonderful pups that need help and a home.

Allergies was ours. Otherwise shelters all the way

like

Yeah, we were actively looking for a year before going breeder, before that I volunteered at another shelter for about 2 years. Wasn’t actively looking for a poodle mix, but don’t remember any coming through in that period either.

Keep adopting your furry pals from your local shelter. Breeders make money off misery.

like

All these reasons for utilizing a breeder boil down to: because I think I would have a better experience. It’s too bad - adopting is one of the easiest and truly good things in this world you can do. Buying a dog signals to me that people believe they deserve something that is unethical but convenient. Breeders also often lie. Their breeding dogs live in squalor with horrible lives as they pump out litter after litter. It’s disgusting. My mutt is my best friend and he’s hypoallergenic…plus adopting him was a good thing for the world.

likefunny

M3, are you hiding that you're from D?

I'm happy you got a hypoallergenic dog from a pound. We looked for quite a while and volunteered at pounds as well.

But shaming people based on disprovable assertions is worse than useless. All breeders aren't unethical. All consultant aren't unethical liars, but some are.

like

You get a puppy and you get to choose its breed. Sometimes you can get a puppy that is pure bred. That’s what people pay for.

like

Because I want a pure bred golden retriever puppy and those don’t exist at the pound

like

They do at breed-specific rescues though, it just takes more patience

I got my dog from a breeder. I am a first time dog parent who (obviously) works a full time job and lived in apartment. So I wanted to know about the needs of a breed before committing to it for its entire life. I didn’t want to adopt a dog who wanted 24/7 snuggles and cried when I left every morning. I didn’t want to adopt a dog who would want a lot of exercise and a yard to run in. That would have been doing that pup a disservice.

My dog is more like a cat, which is typical of the breed I chose. They’re very independent and pretty easy to train. She couldn’t care less when I leave the house and maxed out at ~28 pounds and gets tired out quickly.

I also donated a good amount to the local humane shelter when I brought her home to lessen my guilt 😅

like

Haha, that’s true. She does love to play (especially chasing other dogs) but for like … 10 minutes. That was not the case as a puppy though. Corgi puppies are definitely high energy and they loooooove to bite heels. I’ve blocked it out tbh.

like

I’m all for adopt don’t shop but when you get from a breeder your dog typically has less trauma and is easier to train

like

Fully inaccurate and biologically wrong; mixed breed dogs have fewer behavior problems

Breeders ain’t shit 😭 SO expensive, unethical, and they really don’t know what they’re doing for the most part.

like

I've done both multiple times and if you have a reputable and responsible breeder, buying isn't a problem. While my purebred cost more up front, my adoptees have cost more in the long run due to numerous health issues.

Wouldn't trade any of them as all our great lovable dogs.

After months trying to find a small dog that wasn't a chihuahua or chihuahua mix at shelters within a couple hours of me, I broke down and bought a dachshund. I've never known a chihuahua that I could get along with, and I previously rescued a dachshund from a shelter and had her for 10 years before she passed so at least I knew I liked the breed.

like

That’s us! I have been a big dog girl but we are want a small one specifically a dachshund…

It's on you OP, to know what you want, why, and then choose. Visit the breeder, there isxa huge difference between a puppy mill and a breeder.

I hate all dog ownership (due to owner behaviors); so no real “dog” in this fight - but couldn’t most of this be solved with DNA testing shelter dogs? Won’t solve behavioral history but trait-wise?

I’m not from an English speaking country but I am watching a tv show and businessmen walk into a room and instead of greeting eachother, everyone says each person’s first name in lieu of hi, however in my experience working in the states, I haven’t seen anyone do this, it’s always hi or good afternoon or some other greeting first THEN they say their first name. is it also appropriate to omit the greeting?
