35k in NYC? That's slave labor! Where do you live? Under a bridge? My entry level job in 1998 was 28k. Sheesh.
$30k for entry level is great and you're much more likely to get at agency versus elsewhere. Concentrate on the skills you can get agency side versus the salary before you hop and you'll level up much quicker outside. You won't acquire those skills as quickly brand side. NYC vs other cities doesn't matter. They may pay a little less but with a $5-$10k difference (which I know feels like a lot) but the experiences and skills you gain at your level makes a significant impact on your career projection and long-term earnings.
My first ad job in 2013 was $40K per year. Impossible to live in NYC for less than $35 without parental support (and even that is pushing it)
$30K for entry is pretty normal, creative Jrs get more, but everyone I know on the other side gets less. Either way strat jobs are super hard to get, so take what you can.
43k is entry level at spark foundry. Regardless of role
When I graduated from school in 2010, I had a professor tell us not to take under 35 as well because you really can't live in NY making under that. And if you have loans, forget it.
Digitas started a friend of mine at $45k. MEC is $35k rest of GroupM ranges up to $30-35k. Starting salaries are low but if you are good at the job you can be promoted within 8-10 months.
Minimum for Analyst at Digitas (a campus hire level role) was 55. Which is undoubtedly high for the industry I believe?
I've seen a few $30-some junior positions at good agencies, and can't decide if I'm expecting too much by shying away from those.
Try for 35, at least.
Yeah, the pay ain't great.
What's sad is that despite the shit salaries they pay us most agencies still aren't performing well financially
Yeah... Big Apple bay beh
I made 35k at my first jr strat role in the Midwest . It was definitely more comfortable. Then moved to NYC and started a bit higher on the payscale since I had one gig under my belt.
Shoot for 40, don't go lower than 35. Cite Heather's job survey if you need a negotiation tool.
Regardless of the advertised salary, apply to everything and call everybody.
There are more qualified candidates than there are junior roles out there.... And increasingly fewer agencies with the resources to properly train. That's why the network counts for so much.
That said, I read a job post this morning for a Sr Strat role calling for a minimum of 3 years (!!??) experience.
Once you get a couple years in, your value racks up quickly. The demand for juniors might be low, but (truly) qualified mids, seniors and heads are sought after.
@ogilvy 1 - you have shit salaries, you hire shit talent, shit work is done, and voila, business fails
("You" as in anyone - not calling out Ogilvy which is what that looks like)
Oh yeah... you must've learned a lot of good shit.
Don't accept less than 40 please. Or if you do, consider a side hustle or two. Start doing freelance copywriting so you can become a content strategist eventually. And wait tables/bartend. You'll easily make more money there
