What is the best way to break into the DC market. I am currently at a firm just outside of the AMLAW100 in the south. I went to a lower ranked law school but finished at the top of my class. I want to move to DC and keep a similar or high salary if possible.

Hi I have asked to be an advisor for a startup. Its in its very early stage pre pre-seed. Its looking like weekly strategy calls and possibly some executional work as well. Like building out a sales process and/or training sales and marketing team members (this might be 1-3hr a week of work).

I just defended my first depo and I feel like I did a terrible job. The questions and answers were so fast I feel like I didn’t even have a chance to think what objection was appropriate. Any resources for learning objections better. Or tricks on how to tell when a question being asked is not good?

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

I have a deadline to respond to a Motion for SMJ in 1 1/2 weeks. I just found out that my grandparents who I haven’t seen since the start of the pandemic will visit this week. Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.

Does anyone else constantly put off putting their time in as they go and then hate their life at the end of the month? Then once you get caught up, you don’t want to enter more time, and so you fall behind again. It’s a vicious cycle.

So is it just me or do people who have been doing ID for decades generally fall into one of two groups? The first group are cynical people who have been divorced, their kids hate them, etc. then the second group are BS artists who are skilled at avoiding both work and responsibility for anything?

Realizing that even though I enjoy litigation, I have a really hard time with the amount of hours we work leading up to trial. Four days out from trial and I am exhausted/on the verge of illness from lack of sleep. How do people do this their entire career?

For those of us whose firms start their FY on 12/1, how did you do on your hours this past year?

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?
