What is the best way to break into the DC market. I am currently at a firm just outside of the AMLAW100 in the south. I went to a lower ranked law school but finished at the top of my class. I want to move to DC and keep a similar or high salary if possible.

Does your AMLAW100 have a DC office? Transferring here would be easiest. DC generally isn’t a hard market to break into bc it’s the lawyer capitol of the country, and waiving-in here is easy for licensure purposes. I would start by submitting your application for the DC bar so when you begin applying you can say DC bar admission is “pending”

Hi I have asked to be an advisor for a startup. Its in its very early stage pre pre-seed. Its looking like weekly strategy calls and possibly some executional work as well. Like building out a sales process and/or training sales and marketing team members (this might be 1-3hr a week of work).

They are offering 1.5-3.5%. — I am wondering if that’s enough.

In addition to this the founder mentioned that he would like me to consider becoming a co-founder.

Fellow Fishbowlers,
Need to discuss an offer I got from MasterCard for Director of Product, based in Pune, India. Below are my details:
I am a multiple time founder, ran my company for 4 years, a self funded startup, so no concept of salary. My last CTC with a US based firm as a consultant was USD 96000 until Jan 2021 (I was residing in India).
I have an offer in hand from a startup for 90 LPA + 1Cr worth of ESOPs.
What number should I start with and what should I really expect? Thanks much.

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?
